For my inquiry project, I’m going to look at teaching myself some cake decorating skills. Some skills that I would like to attempt to master would be buttercream flowers; several piping techniques using different tips; I would love to try my hand at mirror glaze which I think is such a cool technique (below is a compilation video demonstrating this technique – super satisfying to watch!); and maybe try to use fondant to either cover a cake or use it to create some toppers! At the end of my inquiry project, my end goal is to create a cake using as many techniques that I learned (and obviously mastered) as I can, sort of like a final showcase of my skills.
As a first step to my project, I made my way over to Michael’s yesterday and spent far too long in the store staring at all the tools I could buy and ended up purchasing a few piping tips and some icing spatulas which are pictured in the feature image of this post. I bought a set of tips specifically for creating flower petals and leaves so hopefully I can make some good ones!
Hopefully for my next post I will have some thing to show in terms of the evolution of my skills… this will be my goal before I make my next post!

I can’t wait to see the things you make out of fondant farther in the semester, I’ve been watching “The Great Canadian Baker” and it’s amazing the stuff you can build! That show is a great source of inspiration for cake decoration. I tried doing some buttercream waves for a mermaid cake this summer using a plastic bag with the end trimmed, and the main takeaway from that experience was definitely go buy some pipping tips like you did!
