This week on Sarah Does Stuff with Icing: Writing!

I got pretty busy the last couple weeks and completely forgot about my initial batch of icing that I made, so that’s been in the fridge for a while… but it sure helped me save some time when it came to writing with icing! (Don’t worry, it’s in the garbage now. I actually don’t remember when I made it… yikes.) I designated myself as dessert person for Thanksgiving dinner so I was busy on the weekend with that. So busy that I forgot to take pictures of my delicious treats. I’m actually not a huge fan of pie crust, so I decided to make shortbread “pie”. It was also my first time using pumpkin and I was so stoked how well it turned out – super creamy and smooth. I tried to go shopping for pumpkin purée on the holiday Sunday and of course couldn’t find any, but then I remembered that pet stores sell pumpkin purée (it’s good for upset tummies) so I grabbed a couple cans of that… don’t worry, it’s the same stuff as in the stores. I wish every weekend could be Thanksgiving weekend, I love food holidays.

Turns out I have forgotten everything I knew about writing in cursive that I learned in second grade. Why I thought that was going to be a super important life skill, who knows.

I struggled a bit in the beginning because my icing was still too cold to run smoothly, but after some time I got some decent writing practice in! I also struggled a bit with keeping a steady hand – straight lines are hard. It’s also super fun to doodle with edible “ink”, 10/10 would recommend.

My doodling masterpiece (excuse the shadows)

I am excited that this closes my chapter on icing work, and I can’t wait to get into some more complicated design techniques. My brother’s birthday is at the beginning of November, so I think I will test myself and make him a cake using some of the icing techniques I have been practicing and hopefully it turns out really nice! I will post the results either way.

I find it ironic that I’m blogging about baking during my education program. I had applied to the program two years ago and didn’t get in so last year when I applied I told myself that if I didn’t get in again, I was going to follow my passion path and try to go to baking school! But hey, maybe down the road I’ll add that to my resume as well, who knows.

Here’s some more in depth look at the writing practice I did! Bonus points if you can spot the middle school “S” doodle that everyone did for some reason back then, and that I apparently still do.

Tune in next week for something exciting! I really want to incorporate video editing into one of these posts so I was thinking of making a cooking show like post. Here’s hoping I can get around to it for the next post!
